World Affairs Council of Hilton Head
A forum on international issues and American interests in the world

News and Notes

Welcome to News and Notes

As we begin our 2009-2010 year, the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head is launching a variety of new initiatives to offer our members as well as others on Hilton Head with an interest in international affairs, the opportunity to learn about and discuss critical global issues.  This year's regular program covers a spectrum of topics.  We hope that our new discussion series will provide a venue for give-and-take on the questions they raise as well as broaden the subject matter to include issues that our members and the community want to address.   To manage our activities, we welcome your participation as volunteers.  And, as always we welcome your comments and suggestions.  To learn more about our program, be sure to go to our web site-wachh.org-or contact any Board member or our Administrative Director, Joan Lemoine.

New Board Members

We are pleased to welcome a number of new members to the World Affairs Council Board of Directors.   In 2009, these new directors include Mrs. Carolyn Robinson who will serve as our Treasurer; Mr. Clifton Jester who will serve as the Board's Recording Secretary; Dr. Michael Fritz, Mr. Blaine Lotz, Brigadier General (US Army Retired) James Shufelt, Ms. Marilyn Bertke and Mr. Don Ferguson.   The World Affairs Council Board is a working board, and to our good fortune, we continue to attract leaders such as our new members who have highly distinguished backgrounds, a wide array of experiences and interests valuable to our programs, and a commitment to contribute to the community that will help ensure the successful future direction of our council.

The biographies of our new Directors are available for you to read on our web site.

Outreach Initiatives

Outreach to the community is at the core of our mission to offer a forum on international issues and  to serve that goal we have launched three new initiatives this year.

Speakers' Bureau

For more than a quarter century, the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head has provided a forum for its members to gather to hear presentations on national and global issues.   The Council has now brought that opportunity to Hilton Head organizations.

As part of our effort to contribute to the local dialogue on the major issues affecting our community and our country, the World Affairs Council has assembled a group of its members whose current activities as well as experience make them ideal speakers on global issues.  Each of these members believes our Council must play an active role in expanding and enriching the dialogue on international affairs.  Together, we all agree: all politics are local, including the development of an informed, intelligent, and relevant discussion of the major global challenges facing our country.

A mailing was sent to civic organizations, plantation general managers, and media outlets describing the program and providing a biography of members of the Bureau.  Each of these council members has a background and professional experience in international affairs and is available to speak to local organizations on foreign and national security affairs, international economic and business issues, as well as on the role of the World Affairs Council.  If you'd like more information about the program and our speakers for your organization, contact Joan Apple Lemoine.

Great Decisions Program

Thanks to the success of its pilot program last spring, the Great Decisions Program will continue this fall and again in spring 2010.  Four member-led discussions are scheduled this fall, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., on the following Tuesdays: 10/13, 11/17, 12/15, and 1/19/2010. The topics that will be addressed by our member-led discussion groups are chosen from chapters in the "Foreign Policy Great Decisions 2009" briefing book: Egypt: key ally in the Middle East; Global Food Crisis; Human Rights in a New Era; and Afghanistan and Pakistan.

We hope you'll take part in this new forum.  Keep an eye on your email inbox.  Members will receive an email with information about registering for this program.

World Affairs Discussion Group
Members and Wait-List

Each year we hear a widespread comment from our members after each Friday morning session.  "I wish there was more time to talk about the topic our speaker just addressed."  To meet that interest, we are launching the World Affairs Discussion Group.

This fall, the group will meet on the Tuesday following our Friday morning presentation.  Attendance is open to our regular members and to those on the waiting list.  The topic for each discussion will be the issues raised by our speaker on the preceding Friday. The only "requirement" for those on the waiting list is that they take the time to listen to the speaker's presentation by going to our web site and click on the icon, audio-icon , to hear the recording of the previous Friday's presentation.  In addition to the audio  transcript, we will also provide participants with other references that can be accessed on the Web.

The World Affairs Discussion Group will meet on the following Tuesdays: 10/6, 10/20, 11/10, 11/24, 12/8.

The format for each session will be an open, informal discussion led by a facilitator.  The number of participants will be limited to 20 to foster participation by all.

Watch your email for more information about registering for this new World Affairs Discussion Group.
Guest Policy
Guest Fee

Because our meetings are very often "sold out" we do our best to accommodate guests but cannot always offer the hospitality we would like to everyone who would like to attend.

Space permitting, members may bring guests to meetings twice in a program year.  This year as a matter of fairness, we are instituting a $5.00 admission fee for each guest.  The fee represents the cost per session for a member.  We encourage members who cannot attend a meeting to invite a guest or wait-listed person to attend in their place.  When you do so, however, please advise them to report to the membership desk upon arrival at the Main Street Theater and that the $5.00 fee applies to cover their attendance as guest.

Please also note that the guest policy applies to spouses of members who do not belong to World Affairs Council of Hilton Head.  As non-member spouses develop an interest in attending programs on a regular basis they are urged to apply for membership and have their names added to the Wait List.  Until they attain full membership status, their attendance is subject to the same policy as guests and other wait-listed persons.

To facilitate attendance of all guests and wait-listed persons, please contact Administrative Director Joan Apple Lemoine, at wachhi@gmail.com or 422-1442.

WACHH - New Administrative Director

Dr. Joan Apple Lemoine assumes the position of Administrative Director for the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head in 2009-2010.  In this capacity, she will continue to serve as an ex officio member of the board of directors.

Joan's new position is experimental.  For our Council, it represents an important step in developing the means to ensure we can deliver to our members and the community the programming we believe is critical to discharge our mission: 1) the delivery of high quality, professional presentations on global issues to inform and educate our members and 2) providing forums for the community at large, that will enhance understanding of the important international developments that affect our country and the world.

Joan's impressive resume is available on our web site.  Her experience, skills and enthusiasm represent enormous assets for our organization's effort and for our members individually as they seek to take advantage of what World Affairs Council has to offer.
