Maria Velez de Berliner, Ph.D, a highly respected member of the international Intelligence Community, serves as a consultant to the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security on issues of global security. Dr. Berliner is a Professor of Political Violence and Terrorism, and of Intelligence and Strategic Analysis at the George Washington University, Washington D.C. She is also Instructor on Strategic and Tactical Security at the U.S. Air Force Strategic Operations Command – USAFSOC’s Special Operations School, Hulbert Field, Fl. and has served as Guest Lecturer at SOUTHCOM’s Security Culture Program, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Universidad EAFI (Colombia) and Canning House (London), among others.
Dr. Berliner was Keynote Speaker at the Johns Hopkins University Applied National Laboratory’s Asymmetric Operations Working Group and the Asymmetric Warfare Group on issues related to the global formation, growth, expansion of transnational terrorist and transnational criminal organizations.
Dr. Berliner, a resident of Hilton Head for four years, is a dedicated member of the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head’s Program Committee. Her focus is on international issues expected to become game changers in matters of security and foreign policy. These include Exogenous Actors in Latin America and U.S. Security priorities, Brazil and the Collapse of the BRICS; Food as a Weapon of War and a Tool of Diplomacy; and the Future of Hostile Insurgencies. Dr. Berliner has successfully enlisted outstanding WACHH speakers who have addressed these Issues.
Dr. Berliner is the author of “The Middle East and Latin America: Implications for Latin America’s Security” in the Rutledge Handbook of Latin American Security Studies (David R. Mares and Arie M. Kacowicz, Eds.) and “Examining the Core Elements of International Research Collaboration (U.S. National Academy of Science, 2013).
Her insightful analyses have appeared in The Harvard Business Review Brazil; The Harvard Business Review America Latina; The Latin America Advisor; Location International (London); and Transnational Organized Crime (London.) She appears regularly as SME on the Middle East on Voice of America and has been featured in other global media including RCN’s TNT24 Noticias (Colombia), Bloomberg Reporte Financiero, Latin Business Chronicle; International Investor and The Miami Herald.
Dr. Berliner was awarded the Major General John A. Alison Special Operations Educator of the Year 2011 by the USAF Special Operations School. Dr. Berliner, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, has a Doctor of Law Honoris Causa from Lake Forest College. She serves on the Board of Advisors of the Center for Latin American Studies of the University of Pittsburgh.
