Tariffs as Tools:

Policy, Politics, and Protectionism.

Ben Kinnas spent over 30 years managing major money center banks across Asia, with

postings in Japan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. His extensive experience placed

him at the heart of some of the most critical trade flashpoints between the United States

and key Asian economies. With a deep background in trade finance and international

supply chain dynamics, Ben brings firsthand insights into the realities of global

commerce.

In this presentation, Ben will explore the complex world of tariffs, including:

  • How tariffs work—who imposes them, who actually pays them, and how they affect pricing along the supply chain.
  • Who wins and who loses—from domestic industries to foreign exporters, and the unintended consequences for consumers and businesses.
  • Non-tariff barriers—including regulatory restrictions, quotas, subsidies, and currency manipulation that can distort fair competition.
  • Structural trade impediments—such as intellectual property enforcement, forced technology transfers, and unequal market access.
  • The political economy of tariffs—why governments use them not just for economic purposes, but for strategic or electoral purposes.
  • Tariffs in today’s world—a look at recent U.S.–China trade tensions and what they reveal about the shifting landscape of global trade.
  • Alternatives to tariffs—how nations can promote fair trade through diplomacy, multilateral agreements, and economic cooperation.

With real-world anecdotes and a pragmatic understanding of East–West trade

dynamics, Ben will offer a candid look at the tools, tensions, and trends shaping global

trade today.
